Review: The Light of Asteria by Elizabeth Isaacs

Title: The Light of Asteria
Series: Kailmeyra #1
Author: Elizabeth Isaacs | Author Website
Available: Now
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Fantasy

Description via Goodreads:

If Nora Johnson hadn't been on campus that day she would have never known her true destiny. Helping her friends move into the dorm that she wanted to call home, Nora accidentally collides with mysterious stranger, Gavin Frey. His very first touch sends flames through her heart. The world seems different-something within her has changed.

She tries to resume her mundane life, but she is now consumed with the one whose very presence ignited her soul, the one with eyes of emerald. Nora soon learns that an energy buried deep within has been unleashed. She now wields unimaginable power and has become Gavin's source, his strength.

Her newfound joy is shaken when she discovers that Gavin is not who he appears to be and she has been thrust in the middle of a war of mythical proportions. Negativity allows all things evil to flourish, the earth is under siege. The fate of creation hinges on the power within her heart. Will she be strong enough to survive?

My thoughts:

Nora collides with a stranger with beautiful green eyes while visiting friends at their college. In that moment life takes on a new meaning. Animals seem drawn to her, foods she used to love repulse her, her friends and family even begin to comment that she looks different. Nora finds it hard to believe the stranger named Gavin could be the cause. His face and emerald eyes begin to occupy her every thought, and she longs to see him again. She begins to realize their connection runs deeper than she ever could have imagined, and the life she knew quickly begins to change.

I didn’t know what to expect when I went into this book. I’d skimmed the rave reviews, and noticed many trusted Goodreads friends had given it a whopping 5 stars. Then I started reading and thought this is the type of a book I could crawl into and live. The author’s writing is packed full of so much emotion and detail. While reading I felt an array of such strong emotions triggered by the beautifully descriptive writing. The combination of intense action and emotions made this a very quick paced read for me. Add in the mystery shrouding Gavin and his family, puzzling together why he was so strongly drawn to Nora (and her to him), and I found The Light of Asteria difficult to put down.

The characters in this book were especially wonderful. Nora’s foster mother, Edna, was by far my favorite. I loved her old fashioned words of wisdom. Nora is also a character that was very easy to like. Rena is another favorite. She is so full of life, and I enjoyed every scene she was in.

I love that the author doesn’t put everything on the table right away. You have to read and discover what Gavin is exactly, and what the connection between him and Nora entails. The romantic elements are very strong in this book, but the action and mystery add a nice balance. The feelings between Nora and Gavin are extraordinary, and I was taken aback a little with the speed and intensity at which their relationship progressed. As the story unfolds and you discover all the details, it becomes easy to see why things developed as they did.

The Light of Asteria is a really wonderful book, and I’ll continue this series without a doubt.  I’d definitely recommend this to readers who enjoy fantasy with strong romantic elements.

This or That with author Elizabeth Isaacs (& A Giveaway)

Please welcome Elizabeth Isaacs, author of the Kailmeyra series, to the blog today!

Desktop or Laptop?
Laptop!

Black Ink or Blue?
Have no idea why, but I love blue ink. I think it has something to do with the fact that I live in Kentucky.

Sunrise or Sunset?
Sunrise, any day of the week. There is something about watching the birth of a new day that gives me hope.

Heels or Flats?
Flats … I hate heels.

Cooking or Takeout?
If there’s someone else to clean up the mess, then cooking. If not, takeout!

Hardback or Paperback?
Paperback. My books look read when I’m done with them. I lay them open, break the spine, take them with me wherever I go. I re-read them until their pages fall out, and then I get a replacement copy.

eBook or Dead Tree Book?
I love Dead Tree Books, but I’m trying to adapt to the times and am reading more on line. I just love the smell of a book. The pages, the ink, the glue … it’s the embodiment of home.

Cats or Dogs?
I have two dogs. One is a rescue hound, the other a retriever/shepherd mix we got from a farm. I wouldn’t trade them for the world.

Regular or Diet?
Diet. Regular just makes me thirstier.

Call or Text?
Calling, hands down. I’m too verbose, and, as texting is a form of writing, I find that I edit as I go. My daughter razzes me about it all the time.

Twitter or Facebook?
I have an addiction to twitter. I love the fast pace of it and the way that the 140 characters force people to say what the mean to say.

Stay up late or Wake up early?
Both. I average about 4-6 hours of sleep a night, but if I had to choose, I’d say I love the mornings. I’m rested, and it’s my time (I get up at 4:30 every morning to write)

Elizabeth, Thank you so much for playing “This or That” with me!
